Uric Acid Testing and Gout Management
Gout is a form of arthritis that occurs when high levels of uric acid in the blood cause sharp crystals to form, and accumulate in and around a joint, giving very intense pain. Although uric acid is expelled in the urine, any excess accumulates in the joints.
Uric acid is produced when the body breaks down a chemical called purine which occurs naturally in your body and is found in certain foods. For gout a special diet and lifestyle is usually recommended which will usually decrease the number of attacks and limit their severity. However medication is also usually needed to control the effects.
The uric acid level is tested using a blood test.
This takes about 10 mins.
The result may cause you to make lifestyle changes or consult your doctor.
